Having worked as both a Trainer and an image consultant, I have had various interactions with the concept of ‘Personal Branding.’ In my sales training roles, the focus was on how to communicate with customers and colleagues through what you said, how you looked and your non verbal messages. With the Image consulting, I focused on how clients looked (and the confidence that they gained from looking great). As a Life Coach, my attention has moved from this External Branding, or what I call ‘packaging & marketing’ to what I now describe as Internal Branding. Your Internal Brand includes your attitude, values, your behaviours, self esteem and your level of confidence. It also represents the different ways you communicate without words. It is you as a ‘product’.
Your non-verbal communication is key to your brand, as your facial expressions, body language and general attitude are key forms of communication. When the positive aspects of these characteristics are in place, your spoken words become secondary. That’s how powerful your Internal Brand can be.
And when your Internal ‘Product’ and Outer ‘packaging’ are congruent, your Personal Brand becomes authentic – to you and to those you are communicating with. When you have an authentic Personal Brand, what you will experience is an increase in your confidence and sense of purpose. Your Personal Brand is all about your reputation – what others think about you. (Just consider the strength of Toyota’s brand whilst weathering its current storm).
People we consider to be charismatic or special have managed to develop a strong Personal Brand – think about Oprah Winfrey, President Obama or Madonna. Their internal brand is certainly supported by their outer image, even when that image is changed as frequently as Madonna’s! When you notice someone who looks special on the outside they will have spent time, energy and determination to refine these aspects of their brand ‘packaging’.
This dual approach to Personal Branding is the most effective way to create and develop a Personal Brand that’s both authentic and sustainable. Once you acknowledge who you really are on the inside, and learn how to express it on the outside, you become more of yourself. When this happens you will begin to feel and look ‘together.’
Research shows it takes 10-seconds to make a first impression. You only get that one chance. Having an authentic Personal Brand enables you to make a positive impression every time. So make sure you are always dressed and groomed appropriately for a specific occasion.
Here are a few simple tips – I hope you can consider their helpfulness in developing the Brand New You!
Internal Branding
1. Define your core values – these are the key
2. Think positive thoughts, even when you feel less than positive
3. Write down your goals – for the week, the month, the year, next year…
4. Be grateful for what you have so that you can attract more of it, rather than focusing on what you don’t have (and also attracting more of that!)
5. Be open about learning new ideas
6. Be a good listener – listen to both the words and the non-verbal messages behind them
7. Do something nice for someone else very day – even if it is just a smile or a compliment
8. Keep your promises.
External Branding
1. Personal grooming – hair, skin, accessories and clothing
2. Confidence body language – sit or stand tall without leaning or slouching
3. Good eye contact
4. Attire that is appropriate to the situation that says something personal about you, whether it is a business meeting, first date or wedding reception
5. Smile – (I have said this before!)
6. Good manners – check the etiquette for the situation
7. Ensure that your written ‘brand’ reflects the best of you – consider your on-line presence, your business stationary and your resume.
