Welcome to Part-3 in our five part series on Multi Level Marketing Software Secrets for Saving You Tons of Time, Energy and Money. My purpose with this series is to review some of the best (and the worst) software out there so that you can dramatically increase your sales while just as dramatically reducing the time and energy you put into your business.

With the possible exception of your online subscriber list, the most valuable asset you have in your business is the machine you’re likely reading this article on – your computer. With so much to do in your business, and almost all of it done on your computer, your computer’s reliability and performance assume a central role in the efficiency and therefore the profitability of your business.

If your computer is underperforming, you’re going to pay the price in terms of frustration, wasted time, wasted energy and quite possibly in lost sales.

Unfortunately, a great many people who get into the network marketing business don’t know anything more about their computer than how to open a browser and use Microsoft Word. And consequently they don’t realize how important it is for them to take proactive measures not simply to ensure their computer’s security – almost everyone is now aware of the need for a firewall and anti-virus software – but also to ensure its continued performance.

They don’t realized, for instance, that they’re constantly creating “temporary files” that will accumulate and slow their machine’s performance over time, or that their hard disc is becoming more and more “fragmented.”

This article is intended to bring you up to speed on some of the best tools out there to protect your computer and its performance. Of course, this is written from the perspective of network marketing specifically and isn’t meant to be a comprehensive treatise on computer performance. It’s also biased toward PC users, so I apologize to Mac users in advance should any of the tools I recommend be inapplicable to them. I assure you that’s not out of any antipathy toward Mac computers, since I’m quite likely to head in that direction soon myself!

The Most Basic Layer – Security Protection:

You absolutely must protect your computer with a firewall. This prevents unauthorized access to your computer and is a first step towards preventing identity theft.

Obviously, you need an anti-virus software to scan incoming messages and especially their attachments, as well as any files you download, to ensure they’re not carrying hidden nasty things that could severely damage your computer. And along with anti-virus software, you also need anti-spyware to find programs sent by other sites to “infiltrate” your system and report back to the bad guy’s headquarters.

The one I recommend (and my computer repair guy does too!) is Zone Alarm Security Suite. This is a paid program with a low annual fee that allows you to protect your computer on pennies a day. I’ve used this for years and it’s well worth the investment.

The Advanced Layer – Performance Enhancement

Recently I suffered a significant system crash that taught me a number of lessons. First, I learned that some of the tools I was using to optimize my computer’s performance weren’t worth the proverbial paper they were printed on, while there are some other tools out there that will give you astounding results. And here are some of the latter:

Windows CleanUp! This free software deletes temporary files you create while you surf the net, it empties your recycle bin and also deletes files in your temporary folders. It’s quick and easy to use and can free up a lot of disc space.

Similar to this is Cleaner (Crap Cleaner), another free tool that removes unused and temporary files from your system, allowing it to run faster and more efficiently, while freeing up space on your hard drive.

As a matter of fact, these two utilities recently freed up 2.6 Gigabytes of space on my hard drive, giving me vastly improved performance. Now if only some utility could be found to do the same for my brain, I’d be in great shape!

SUPER Anti-spyware and Malwarebytes: these are two free utilities you’ll definitely want to run next.

The final piece in the puzzle is disc defragmentation. “Fragmentation” occurs when your system cannot or will not allocate enough disc space to store an entire file as a unit, and instead breaks up that file and stores it in bits and pieces wherever space can be found. So the defragmentation process ideally restores the integrity of your stored files, while freeing up space on your hard drive.

The problem is that there are different approaches to defragmentation and not all of them work equally well. Without getting into technical details that I could parrot to you without really understanding them in any depth, many of the defrag utilities out there, including any that came installed on your computer when you bought it, are likely to be what I call “defrag lite”, meaning “not very good”.

If you want a real defragmentation utility, the one I recommend is Disckeeper 2009. This one takes some time to run, but the results speak for themselves. Use this one and you’ll never look back.

Other Performance Enhancers You Might Overlook…

If your computer is suffering from performance problems, particularly while you’re operating online, you might experience a world of difference by something as simple as using a different browser. This happened to me recently, when a simple switch to Firefox from my previous Yahoo browser eliminated a host of problems. If you’re using the latest version of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (version 8, as of the time of writing), then you also might want to experiment with Firefox, both because the latter is universally acclaimed for reliability and security and because I’ve run into several people, including my computer technician, who have had to uninstall Internet Explorer 8 from their systems precisely because it was so troublesome.

And finally, almost every software you download thinks it’s the most important software in the world and that therefore it has the right to hog your system’s resources by automatically starting up when you start up your computer. Eventually, of course, your start-up sequence takes longer and longer and you can’t figure out why. However, there is an answer. You can simply go into your system and take away the permission for these programs to start up automatically. It’s like saying to them, “don’t call us; we’ll call you!”

So if you want to protect your computer and your business, you need to make sure you have these three things in place:

1. Basic Protection: a firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware program

2. Advanced Measures: excellent cleaning, anti-spyware/malware and disc defragmentation utilities

3. Limit the number and type of programs that start up automatically when you turn your system on

4. A world-class browser

If you do these simple things, you’ll find your computer is running far better and will stay running well for a long time to come. And that in turn will allow you to get on with marketing your business and making lots of money doing it.

Next time on our Multi Level Marketing Software Secrets, we’ll talk about types of software that will increase the precision of your marketing.

Happy marketing!
