Searching for tweets from a person

If you want to see all the tweets posted by someone, it is easiest to search to that person’s profile page on Twitter. However, what if you want to see only certain subsets of those tweets.

For example, you want to see only those tweets for that person which include a certain word or phrase. To do that, you need to a detailed and specific search engine.

Here is how you can search for tweets posted by someone using the Advanced Search page using 3 easy steps

1. In the “From this Person” text box, type Twitter username of person whose tweets you want to search for.
2. Use one or more text boxes in the “Words” section to specify which tweets you want to match.
3. Click Search

You can also search for a person’s tweets from the Search box. The operator you use is from; and insert it immediately in front of the username for example

Media from:username

Searching for Replies to a Person

Twitter replies are very elusive because you may see them only in certain situations

• If the reply is sent to you
• If the reply is sent by someone you follow to someone you follow

However, replies are public for most users (unless you have your profile set to private) so it seems reasonable that there should be some way to search for them. To search replies sent to a particular person, the best way is via search engine.

1. Click Advanced Search link
2. In the “To this Person” text box, type Twitter username of person who received replies you want to
search.
3. Use one or more text boxes in the Words section to specify what tweets you want to match.
4. Click search.

The other way to search from the Search box is to use the “to” operator, which you insert in front of the username. For example, “marketing tousername”. In this search query the command is searching for replies to the user, which include the word “marketing”.

Remember that username is replaced with the actual name of Twitter user.

Searching for Tweets That Mention a Person

Reply tweets are always going start with @username, but there are also plenty of tweets that mention @username whether it be to acknowledge them, shout out to someone, or FollowFriday recommendation, or any other known posts.

To search for tweets mentioning a user with Advanced Search page, follow these steps

1. In the “Referencing this Person” text box, type in Twitter username of person whose mentions you want to search
2. Use one or more text boxes in the “Words” section to specify which tweets you want to match.
3. Click Search

To execute this same type of search use the @ operator, which you can insert immediately in front of the username. For example, RT@username. This search looks for mentions of user that contain the text RT (so these are retweets).
