You are your own entity. As far as a personal brand goes, you are its face, owner and personality. Personal brands are defined by the individual and help, as the individual operates as an employee, to endorse a product or service. By keeping yourself individual as you involve yourself with corporations and companies, you will bring your personal touch to the industry and create a more expansive opportunity.
Should you merge?
If you are considering merging your personal brand with a company brand, you should consider what the purpose of doing this? Think about what services you will bring to the company and what their dealings with you will be. If it is your company you are creating, then it is possible to simply merge at a partial level. By doing this you can expand your reach through two different brand names. Both can assist one another and amplify your abilities. Risks are sometimes a necessity during business ventures, but consider the saying: “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” The business world is full of fluctuations and nothing except change itself ever changes. A merging situation should always be considered for its risks and benefits. Just remember that if your personal brand becomes the company brand, it will be difficult to get it back.
And, for Twitter?
On the social media side of the situation, it is important to remember that as a personal brand, you are speaking for a larger company brand. Your voice is what the public hears. If your brand name is the company brand name, the public may not recognize you when you’re gone. Your voice the ceases to be individual or unique. Often times, people themselves do enjoy hearing from an individual, especially one they can relate to. In this situation, a company brand may want you to stay separate from them. There could and often is fear associated with the humanization of a brand. Your endorsements and following will often follow you. As you speak for a variety of companies through social media, you reach a much larger crowd than a single company brand may achieve alone. Through an alliance, your personal brand and the company brand can work together for the greater good.
When utilizing social media, it is important to discern how you are using it and who you are representing when you are speaking. Remember that if your words will affect the direction of a company brand or you’re consulting for the company, chose to link your comments to such sites that they represent. If the comment is personal, or part of your personal brand separate from company relations, it would be a good idea to link them to your personal sites.
As an individual, you have authentic attributes that are uniquely you. Your personal brand carries with it charisma and personality. People want to listen to a voice because that is what each of us has. The public can relate to you as a personal brand. They see your face and recognize you throughout social platforms. As a personal brand, you can also carry your name to different company brands. You build your own name through them and they receive the benefits of your personal brand. A single company may desire to merge your name with their own, and the benefits would be great, but there are risks to associating with companies because often that association become a part of your brand attributes. Just be careful when making the decision that you understand which direction you want your personal brand to go.
