The role of the medical assistant (MA) or a certified medical assistant (CMA) is to assist medical personal like doctors and nurses perform administrative and medical tasks that may be needed at a specific time or situation. This is an allied health career and it is important for the individual to get their education or certifications from recognized medical assistant programs in traditional and online schools.
Many of the medical assistant jobs are usually in doctor’s clinics or in hospitals. There are numerous types of medically associated jobs that call for these assistance and it really offers a flexibility job-wise. This means that the personal preference of an MA can play a role in the choice of jobs.
To train for the career, there are two types of programs now offered. There are the one year certificate courses and there are the two years associate degree courses offered by accredited schools. For those who are getting their training abroad and wish to work in the continental US, it is important to make sure that the school is recognized in the country. And even then, there should be additional tests to be completed before hiring can be done.
The courses included in the education involve math, science, familiarization with medical terminology, medical billing, medical transcription, first aid, and many more. once the program is completed, the individual can now sign up for the certification exam. Only after they complete the exam and pass it can they be considered as CMAs.
The American Association of Medical Assistants offer the courses three times a year. Once the certification is awarded, these can be renewed after five years. Many employers do not really require this certification for the salaries can be higher and they would have to deal with employee benefits. This may not be the right course for them as when there is an incident, they may not be able to justify their decision of hiring a non-certified MA to their insurance providers. Also, they can open themselves to lawsuits from affected patients.
The tasks a medical assistant can perform in hospitals or clinics include taking down the history, the chief complaint, the vital signs, checking in the patient, filing of charts, medical billing, insurance coding, medical transcription and updating of charts. Those who are trained to perform shots can also administer injections. As for their work schedules, this would really depend on the employer and the situation.
