For anyone who didn’t specialise in market research or data analysis, Advanced Question Logic doesn’t mean much.

But I feel it’s safe to assume we’ve all answered a questionnaire before and we understand that there are different types of questions that are asked.

Advanced Question Logic allows you to create specific paths different respondents take throughout the survey to add more value and relevancy to the questions asked. It also shortens the survey making it more intuitive to each respondent.

Skip or Branch Logic.

Skip/Branch logic is the direction or path the survey takes when specific answers for different questions are selected.

To give you an example, a survey was recently sent to all who attended a national conference based in Auckland, New Zealand.

The first question asked was if the respondent had travelled to the event or if they were local.

For all those who chose travelled, the following questions then asked specifically about their stay.

For all those who were local, the survey would skip these questions and go straight to questions regarding the conference itself.

Advanced Skip Logic is an incredibly powerful tool for researchers. Some systems will allow you to skip questions based on a series of answers given previously, so the survey itself is extremely intuitive and customised to every specific respondent.

This not only adds value to the survey, but encourages completion and engagement which will increase your response rates and quality answers.

Exclusive Answer choice is a restriction set in place on a Multiple Answer question. For example, being able to select “None of the Above” is exclusive, so that it is the only choice that can be selected. This means no conflicting choices can be made in error by the respondent.

Extraction is being able to use an answer to a previous question in a subsequent question. I.e. After previously asking for the date of respondent’s visit, a question that says “when you visited us on (12.12.12) what was the weather like?” This shortens the survey so that respondents don’t have to answer the same question multiple times.

Data Validation is another form of question logic.

When a question is asked that calls for a numeric or date answer, the data validation tools sets a specific range of answers that are acceptable. It means that a respondent wont be able to add any value that is inapplicable to the survey.

This validates the data being received, so that no extreme numeric answers are acceptable. For dates, the system won’t let you select a future or past date that is irrelevant.

This also includes Email Address format validation so that it must be a correct email address entered as well as any mandatory questions that must be answered before the respondent can continue.

Advanced Question Logic is an excellent tool for researchers wanting to encourage engagement and validate the data at the point of collection. It not only reduces the size of the survey, but allows your respondents to give honest feedback that will lead to intelligent business decisions.

getsmart surveys are expertly designed, and advanced question logic is available to all clients. With our 46% average response rate, the surveys speak for themselves.
