The Internet Marketing scene has changed massively since the early days at the start of this century, and it has grown into a huge business. In my own personal journey with the ‘Digital Marketing Arena’ I have been exposed to a wide variety of strategies for getting success with ‘IM’ (Internet marketing).

There are some people out there in the IM world making very large sums of money, selling e-books and other electronic information products (as affiliates). There are others selling online coaching tools and programmes, How to run effective Webinars, how to use Twitter and Social Media properly… the list goes on…

The danger with all this great information delivered through ‘Internet Summits’, Online Teleseminars, Webinars is that we can become professional attendees of such events. Don’t get me wrong I am not knocking these events far from it, if nothing else they are an Adrenalin rush for sure, you will meet some great people who could be JV opportunities either now or in the future and, there is a load of useful information to be had at such events.

There is a huge challenge though and one that I wrestled with as well which is… which tools do I use for my business? Which approach? What is best for both the business and suits my brand as an individual? Here are some more… What type of business do you have, do you have a business already or are you just starting out? Do you have products already, or are you looking to be an information product affiliate (digital products such as e-books, training programmes etc. that are delivered with no human intervention) selling other peoples products?

Do you have a clearly identified Niche with a very clear proposition for your potential customers?

We are constantly bombarded with emails about ‘the next most amazing thing’, ‘you really mustn’t miss this will send your traffic into orbit’, ‘if you buy one Affiliate tutorial this year then this must be it!’ it is no wonder that we… ‘Who want all these things we are being offered’, are attracted to them like bees to honey! We would all like things to happen quickly and the reports of 20 year olds making more money per month than many of us see in a year is huge bait indeed! Who are these amazing people and what are they doing that I am not? We have to go and see them don’t we? Surely we are just missing one piece in the jigsaw puzzle and if we can just get that then we’ll be off for sure…

So we attend the meeting which is fabulous, we meet loads of great new people and the presenters are amazing. In hindsight we knew most of the stuff already, this is just a slightly different take on how to do things, but there were some really great new tips too!… and then we’re back at the ranch… So what happens next?

Well, I remember when I was at school working on applied maths problems. The teacher was explaining how to establish the distance a block went along the ground having had a force of so many newtons applied, with a friction of X and a mass of Y. Well I got that… then came the homework… The question was slightly different, there was a hill involved, it wasn’t the distance it travelled but how long it took to stop… Now the theory and examples looked easy… What I struggled with was how to adapt the instruction to the new puzzle that now lay before me, because it wasn’t the same as the example we had been shown!

… and so it is with Digital Marketing, how can we take what others are doing quite obviously with great success and use this in our business to be as successful as them? Well unless we want to do exactly what they are doing then we can’t, there are programmes that if you follow what they say to the letter will undoubtedly generate similar results… the problem I and many like me face is that we can’t do what they are doing nor do we want to, we have our own passions and projects which might in some aspects be similar to the examples we have been shown but… they are not the same!

In truth, we have all the knowledge we need just a massive dose of inertia, it’s information overload, how can we take all these great tools and get them working for our business?

The secret is right there under our noses, and we really need to go right back to basics… Follow these 7 easy steps below to get your thoughts together:-

1) what are you here for? What is the passion for you in this venture?

2) what do your products do for your clients? What is your Big Promise?

3) How do you intend to deliver what you do?

– Via a website or Blogsite, online catalogue or shopping cart

– downloadable

– personally, using online tools, or even visiting the client

4) Now where do your customers hang out? is it retail? Business to Business?

5) How do you intend to collect names and email addresses to talk to?

– do you have a free report to give away on your website?

– do you have a blogsite people can subscribe to?

– a mini e-book they can download in exchange for their details?

– will you be running a Teleseminar or Webinar they can sign up to attend?

– Social Media? Do you use it? Which do you use and why?

Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter, Business Pages

6) What methods will you use to keep in contact with these prospective clients?

– Blogging

– Membership sites

– Regular emails

– Newsletters

7) Once a customer buys then what? What is the strategy for them?

Having followed the steps above, you should now have a much clearer idea of what your proposition is, and how you intend to serve your market.

The next step is to enlist the help of a Digital Marketing Solutions Provider. These individuals will help to select the most appropriate online services required to deliver your proposition. They will also be able to resource the building of the online collateral you will need, and then advise on the best approach to run and maintain your online marketing department.
