Have you spent a lot of time looking for an online income, and come across affiliate marketing, but you aren’t sure what you need to do to make a success of it? Well, you’re not alone.

There are a number of things that you really need to know if you want to make it work. So, settle in for the next few minutes, and discover just what you need to do to be successful with affiliate marketing.

What do you hope to achieve from the process?

OK, that seems like a fairly silly question, doesn’t it? But there is a reason for it: are you in it for the long-term i.e. you want to make a real business of this, or, you just want to make some quick cash?

If you want your marketing effort to give you a long-term income then you’re going to have to do some research into the type of market to go for. If this is a short-term, trend based, cash injection, then you just have to know what’s hot at the moment.

Setting this up as a long-term business may sound like a lot of work, but, marketing based on a trend has challenges of its own. When it comes to trends you’re always going to be looking for the next big thing, and their appeal may only last a few days. If you’re affiliate marketing ‘ever green’ subjects, like weight loss, you’ll have buyers looking at your site for years.

Finding out the figures, first.

Many people are going to assume that other people will like the same things that they do, so there must be an affiliate marketing opportunity in that niche, right? Well, no, not always.

If you’re looking for a niche to tackle, and think you have something that might work, but aren’t too sure, then you should go to Amazon and see if they sell magazines for that niche.

Magazines aren’t cheap to produce; advertising in them is expensive; and they go out of production all the time; so, if you find a magazine on your niche, and it’s been selling for years, you know that there has to be money in that niche.

You may have yourself a winner. Is it time to find a product yet? Not quite, there are still things to be checked out.

The next thing to do is to check the figures in Google.

You’ll quickly be able to see how many sites have your keyword term in them, but that will generally be a broad keyword term i.e. typing in underwater ninja knitting may have 21,000 sites talking about it, but, the actual article may have a sentence like ‘when underwater, and being sneak attacked by a ninja, you’re going to have very little time to do any knitting’. Not exactly what you had in mind; was it?

For your affiliate marketing to be truly effective you should have a good number of exact matches when typing the keyword and you’d also want to see AdWords Ads show up, too. If there’s paid advertising, then the chances are that there’s money in the niche.

Knowing the people you’re trying to market to.

Effective affiliate marketing is as much about knowing the people you’re trying to market to, as it is about knowing the product you’re promoting.

Just imagine, for a moment, that you were extremely interested in the niche of underwater ninja knitting, and you went to a site that knew nothing about it. They had no idea of the terminology, or the fact that going below 20 fathoms makes doing a purl stitch impossible. Would you buy anything they promote?

The chances are you wouldn’t; so, why is that? It’s because they clearly had no idea about the niche and the people interested in it. You’d have been left wondering how they could possibly know what it is that you really need to buy, if they don’t know anything about the niche. That would be your affiliate marketing effort down the drain, unfortunately.

Getting people to the product.

You can, pay to get people to your website, and that’s a great idea if you’re promoting an affiliate marketing product for a trend, but, if this is to be a long-term online income, you should start an affiliate marketing blog.

With your own affiliate marketing blog you can write about the products that you’re promoting. You can do it as a review; and review and comparison of multiple products, all of which you have in your affiliate marketing arsenal, of course; or just as an article on a specific problem, and have a link to the product you’re promoting. That’s affiliate marketing at its best.

The reason why this is one of your top options is because you have control of the affiliate marketing blog that you’ve set up, so you can have any number of articles that you want on the subject, plus, you have the option to have other promotional things on your site if you want.

The tendency, if you’re doing affiliate marketing, however, is to remove anything that might have them leaving your site before they can click your affiliate link.

So, there you have it, 4 things that you need to know that are going to help you with your affiliate marketing.

Decide if it’s going to be a long-term online income system; find out which niche is going to have people interested enough to buy products; get to know the people and niche you’re marketing to, so you can pick the products they’ll be interested in buying; and set up an affiliate marketing blog so that you’ll have content to drag in the people who want to know more about your niche.
