1. Pathophysiology
Pathophysiology is all about the major systems in the body that includes the digestive system, the respiratory system, the reproductive system, the cardiovascular system, the musculoskeletal system, etc. A medical transcriptionist will be required to understand how these systems in the body operate and the diseases that are associated with them.
2. Pharmacology
Pharmacology is all about the knowledge of drugs, its actions and effects on patients and diseases. Knowledge of pharmacology will also include drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion in the body. Medical transcription professionals are expected to know the context in which pharmacology applies to the medical reports.
3. Medical report writing
Medical transcriptionists are required to be educated on how to build medical records and reports from diagnoses, operations, treatments, and recommendations. Extensive knowledge on the different report types, components of the report, and rules of formatting is a necessity.
4. Knowledge of diagnostic reports
Professionals in this field must also be adept in topics that include the diagnostic reports. As a transcriptionist, you will receive audio-recordings that include emergency medicines given, physical exams made, radiology tests and pathology. You must be familiar with terminologies, headings and exercises all relating to diagnostic reports.
As you can see from the above list of technical knowledge, becoming a medical transcriptionist is not a walk in the park. It will require training and proper education before you can start a successful career in this sector. However, all these technical skills required should not sway you from your dreams. The truth is medical transcription training won’t take too long to accomplish. In fact there are schools providing online training which will only take you from 8 months to 1 year to finish. Traditional classroom instructions will be a little longer. Some will take from 18 months to 2 years but it’s still a worthwhile undertaking especially now that the industry is experiencing continuous growth.
So in conclusion, I would like to say that indeed, a medical transcription career is promising. Once you get proper training and if possible professional certification, you can expect to get hired and work on a stable and secured industry. The training is not that long as well compared to other careers. But like most health related work, medical transcription requires specialized knowledge that are best learned by getting proper education.
