1. 4 out of every 5 teens in the US carry a wireless device/mobile phone and over 57% consider it critical to their social lives, with most communication occurring via SMS messages. This is representative of a massive growing and maturing market, primed to be monetized by smart, agile marketers like you!
2. By 2012 there will be an estimated 10 trillion text messages sent worldwide. This obviously identifies text messages as being a well excepted form of communication that is actually read by the recipient. The main point here is: people read text messages out of habit, unlike email, and will need to be highly relevant messages for effective SMS Marketing.
3. 250+ million Americans actually carry a mobile phone (80% of the population!). This number is projected to grow. Countries that have not had such technology, ie: China, are adopting Mobile communication at a phenomenal rate, opening new and lucrative markets. SMS Marketing, as a marketing medium, is set to grow with this rate of adoption. As competition increases for these rapidly growing markets, the businesses with the closest relationships and contact with their customers will prosper the most
4. The global mobile marketing advertising industry is estimated to be valued at over $17 Billion by 2011. This means that large companies have already realized the importance of SMS Marketing. It also presents new opportunities for the Internet Marketing community by extending the marketing reach from traditional websites, search engines, blogs, articles or Pay-Per-Click (PPC), to a new dimension – SMS marketing.
5. By the end of 2010, there were over 5 billion mobile phone subscriptions. The world’s population sits at just over 6.8 Billion. With this volume of subscriptions in mind, there will be close to one mobile phone subscription for every living human. When considering SMS Marketing, this is a strong indication that it may be the most prolific marketing methodology on the planet!
6. Even Apple is no longer called “Apple Computers”. Their main business isn’t in macs, but iPhones, iPads and mobile advertising! Consider iTunes, the Apple App Store, all of which target the market of mobile phone users. More on how to leverage this mass market with SMS marketing strategies will be detailed in a future article – so watch out for that one!
7. Companies such as Apple and Google are investing so much time and money into SMS Marketing. In 2009, Google paid over $750 million for Admob. That means that Google now commands 30 % – 40 % of the mobile advertising market. Does it make you wonder why Google would be so interested in this segment of the advertising market?
8. International Data Corporation (IDC) has predicted that Smartphone Vendors will ship 450 Million Smartphone devices, representing a 49.2% growth year on year from 2010. Based on these figures, this reflects a growth rate 4 times faster than that of standard mobile phone shipments. SMS Marketing strategies can be highly effective for Smartphones, due to the access via SMS to the web. This indicates not only a growing market in terms of volume, but also quality.
9. Which Smartphone Operating System should you cater to? In short, as many as you can, however, the top 3 are: Android with 39.5%, Blackberry (a Corporate favorite!) with 14.9%, and Apple’s iOS with 15.7%. These figures are based on research conducted by IDC. SMS Marketing does not depend on the Mobile Operating System, however, the format and call to immediate action may vary depending on the Operating System. The more generic – the better!
10. What does this all mean for you? If you’re an entrepreneur, an Internet Marker, or simply looking for a way to improve your business, now is the best time to take action and establish your own Mobile Marketing program. There are more eyeballs on small screens than ever before, and with the growth projections mentioned above, you may well be perfectly positioned to take advantage.
