The medical transcription career can be very rewarding, especially if you are looking into the career as a way to work from home or to start your own medical transcribing home business. Many medical transcriptionists attend a medical transcription training program, either at a local college or online, to build a strong foundation for becoming successful in the medical transcription field.

If you are considering a career as a medical transcriptionist, then here are three skills that are necessary to be successful:

* Fast and Accurate Typing
Fast and accurate typing are absolute must-have skills if you want to be successful as a medical transcriptionist. Most medical transcriptionists are paid by line or by page, so the faster and more accurately you type, the more money you can make. At the very minimum, those starting out in medical transcription often type 75 words per minute. Many seasoned medical transcriptionists can type over 100 words per minute with no mistakes. Aside from the ability to type quickly, it is imperative that a medical transcriptionist type accurately. Most transcribed medical reports will become a part of the patient’s permanent file, so it is crucial that there are no mistakes in the transcribing of medical reports, which have the potential to effect the treatment of a patient.

* Correct Grammar and Spelling
Not only should a transcriptionist type quickly and accurately, but he or she should be able to type using correct English grammar and spelling. It is a learned skill to be able to transcribe and make sense of the doctors’ recordings. That is why many medical transcription training programs will have their students listen and transcribe hours and hours of recordings so that they are prepared for real work. When transcribing it is common to come across doctors and health professionals who speak with an accent, so as a medical transcriptionist, along with correct grammar and spelling, you should also have very keen listening skills.

* Knowledge of Medical Terminology
Knowledge of medical terminology will be immensely helpful as a medical transcriptionist. It is no mistake that medical transcription training programs include medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and other medical related courses in their training. The more familiar you are with common medical terms, then the more time you will be able to work, rather than looking up unfamiliar terms in medical dictionaries. Many medical transcriptionists often has a small library of books that they keep for reference purposes; if you are enrolled in a medical transcription training program, then you may consider keeping your textbooks as a reference source after graduation. Along with medical terms, you will also need to become familiar with abbreviations that doctors and other health professionals commonly use, and the meanings of prefixes and suffixes for certain medical terms. With time, you will become more comfortable with medical terms and abbreviations.

While each of these three skills are necessary to become successful, many of the these skills can be acquired with time, practice, and patience.
