Well, no prizes for guessing. D is the acronym for ‘Digital’. Yes, with the internet boom and the dot com burst, the ways and means of marketing and spreading the word about your startup has become all the more easy and cost effective.

Well, the audience of this blog is very well versant about the shoe string budgets with which the start-ups start. It is always a challenge to budget for marketing. Well, no matter how unique and exceptional the product is, the startup needs people to be talking about it. This is only possible when you market, when you provide the platform for the people to talk about your product/service/company.

In this blog or blog series, I’ll try and compile some of the best practices about how the digital marketing can be leveraged to spread the word.

I’ll not be wrong if I say that half of the world population is now on internet and it IS the way to reach the masses. So, the fundamental thing to start with the digital marketing is to have a website of yours.

Choosing the domain name:
The domain name is the first thing that the world at large will see about your company/startup. While you choose the domain name, ensure that it is unique, and single word which is easy to remember. Avoid domain names with two words, phrases with hyphen, dot, or numbers in it. These are generally not easy to remember. Once you choose the domain name, based on the kind of service offering, choose the suffix. (is the body which decides the suffixes for the domain names).

Design of the website
Out of enthusiasm, every start-up tries to design he website in a way which is very high in visual appeal. You do not commit the mistake of making the website graphic centric. The reason behind it is that the major search engines will not crawl (recognize) the images. This will severely hamper the search engine ranking of the website. Make the website ‘lite’, using minimum possible images. Ensure that the design is compatible with all the browsers.

Do not clutter the website with lots of images, and ill-planned navigation system. Ensure that website has an exhaustive and fool proof site map. The major search engines do not crawl the websites without a proper sitemap.

Content on the website
Now this is where you start selling your product/service. Do not try to complicate content on your website. Try and keep it as crisp as possible. Perform some research and shortlist a set if keywords which are relevant to your product/service. These keywords should be strategically used within the content. This exercise will help increase the search engine rankings of the website.

While developing the content, showcase what is ‘new’ and ‘path breaking’ that you are selling. This will help retain the visitor.
