Creating a brand identity is very important to all businesses, whether small or big. To create a winning brand, you will have to focus your mind on your targeted customers, both current and potential customers. These are the people you are targeting and whom you want to respond to your brand. There are mainly four steps you can follow to develop a brand for your home business and they include making a research, defining the preferred values, creating a visual image and testing the image created for feedback purposes.
1. Carrying out research.
Creating a brand identity involves first of all carrying out a research to discover what will work best for your business. The process of researching about your brand should involve looking at other business brands in your marketplace to compare and come up with what you really like.
After looking at other brands, you also have to look at your current brand to find out what it really communicates to your targeted customers. Ask your existing customers what they think about your current brand. Get other people who are not your customers and ask them what they would expect if they were using your products or services. Try as much as you can to listen and to take note of their feedback.
2. Defining your values.
Your brand identity is basically a result of values that your targeted customers expect from your business. This means that you have to create a unique and memorable image of your business. Having done your research, you now have to make a list of all the values that your targeted customers expect from a business like yours.
After listing down all the values, identify a team of people with whom you will brainstorm on the values that your customers want. Brainstorming will help you to zero down to the most appropriate values that can best create the brand image of your business. Identify three most important values that you would like to integrate in your brand.
3. Creating the visual image.
Having selected the three main values that you wish to incorporate in your brand, it’s now time to focus on the visual impact that you want to create with those values. As the first step, you should make a list of all the words that best portray the image you want to create.
Look for samples of the visual representation of the words or messages. You have to know it from the beginning that colors play an important role in the image you want to create. It’s therefore important to select colors that will have greater impact on your targeted customers, colors that will touch the emotional buttons, colors that will spark off your customers’ emotions to take action.
If you cannot create that visual image yourself, I recommend that you engage a professional designer, give him/her all the information needed so that he/she creates exactly what you want to achieve with your brand. Ask the designer to create at least three sample images that are pertinent to the values you want to be incorporated into your brand identity.
4. Getting feedback
After creating the sample images, use the people that were part of the brainstorming team to give feedback to fine tune your images. It’s also important you select a few of your existing customers to give their feedback so that you can refine your images and select only one that best communicates what you want to achieve. Put yourself in the picture of a customer and ask yourself what that image communicates to you before you finally make your final selection.
