Why would DARPA be so interested in advancing space age and high-tech manufacturing in America? Well, consider if you will that the reason we won World War II. We out produced the Germans. The Japanese could not out produce us for the number of tanks, planes, guns, and ships. We had an overwhelming force, and we had the advantage of attrition. Luckily, we weren’t all that ignorant either, and we were able to gather our best minds, scientists, and engineers along with the will and strength of character to persevere.
Today, our manufacturing sector has seen better days, and if we were ever involved in a large-scale global war, and if it went on for very long, we wouldn’t be able to produce what we needed fast enough to win it. Therefore, currently whereas we have the most advanced military, in the future that may not be so. Still, history shows us that we need to be able to manufacture our greatest innovations, deal with rapid prototyping, and create numbers necessary to defend all we are and all we’ve built.
Not long ago, I was reading some of the major and advances being made at General Electric with regards to building jet engines and turbines in the MIT Technology Review. There was also a piece in Wired Magazine with regards to the incredible advances in robotic manufacturing thanks to all of the corporate sponsors and the team of robotic engineers at Carnegie Mellon University. And we’ve all heard the stories about the future of 3-D printing, and molecular assimilation and assembly.
With all the research we are doing, all of the exploits in personal technology being developed currently, incredible advances of manufacturing corporate America, and DARPA’s new program to enhance advanced manufacturing technologies we should be able to meet any challenge in the future. That is to say we can meet any challenge to our nation, any challenge in the free market, and still be on the leading edge of technology far off into the future.
Currently, we have some challenges, but isn’t that what makes America great. Isn’t it our adversity that builds character and strength? Anyone that counts out the manufacturing sector in the United States doesn’t understand the ‘systems thinking’ of our top researchers, scientists, computer experts, and engineers behind the scenes, or isn’t watching the incredible amount of money flow working to solve these challenges.
Indeed, I have no fear that the United States of America can “Win the Future” – and I’m pretty confident that DARPA, and other forward thinkers will not only figure this out, they will revolutionize everything we think we know about manufacturing. The game is about to change, and those nations competing against us are going to wonder who stole their cheese. The reality is it never was their cheese to begin with, and they’ve been stealing from us for a long time.
The best way to predict the future is to be the one creating it. That’s what DARPA is doing right now, and if you sit back and watch, you just might learn something. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it. If you have any comments, questions, or additional research papers and case studies for our think tank to read please forward them immediately.
