Affiliate marketing training is available for all levels of experience. In this business, however it is very important to start with the basics, and get some experience under your belt before you move on to the more advanced marketing methods. I hope this article will serve as an affiliate marketing 101, or introduction, and show you what is involved, and what your job will be.

What is affiliate marketing?

Simply put, it is selling goods for a third party website. You get people to visit a specially coded link, provided by the product vendor, and any customers you send through this link give you a potential to receive a payment.

The great thing about the business is anyone can get involved. No specialized training or investment is required, you can be an ‘affiliate’ within the next hour. Whilst this seems great, this ease of starting leads many to not treat their business seriously. Like any business you get involved in, treat it as a serious business, imagine you have thousands invested in it. Also consider investing in some good quality training.

What is your job?

One thing that may surprise you is that your job as an affiliate marketer is not to sell. If anything it is to pre-sell the products, or services you represent. It is the product vendors job to sell. Imagine yourself as an introduction agent, you are introducing a visitor to your website to a company that may be able to solve their needs. You are a matchmaker not a salesman.

How do you get paid?

There are several ways that you can get paid, it depends upon the program you join. The most common is getting paid per sale, simply if the prospect you send makes a purchase you get a percentage. This can range from 5% to 25% for physical goods, to as high as 75%, or more, for software, or digital informational products.

The other main type is pay per lead, sometimes known as per action, here you get paid when the prospect performs a prescribed action, for example fills out a form, or leaves their e-mail address.

Less common is Pay per click, or per view, here you get paid per visitor you send, this is typically the lowest often just one or two cents each time.

Is there a shortcut to success?

Not really, but there is a well proven path. Steer clear of unrealistic promises of easy money. However if you build a good quality website, and then provide well written content, you should find success. One tip I would give you is to use your website to build a list of consumers. Do this by providing an opt in box for people to join your list in a prominent place.

Good affiliate marketing training should be an essential part of your plan when starting in this industry. However I hope this short introduction, or affiliate marketing 101 has helped to give you an idea of the path you should follow.
