So you want an admission to medical school? Well, so do over 40,000 other people. According to Wikipedia, 42,742 people applied to medical schools in the US for 2010 and only 18,665 matriculated. This results in less than 44% of total applicants who were able to make it to the starting class of 2011. And remember, these applicants are among the top students.
Now you see the competition and what you are up against. If you are still serious about admission to medical school, read on.
The perfect candidate will have a solid academic score (in terms of GPA and MCAT score), participate in medically-related extra-curricular activities, and is well-rounded.
The first and most important items, the GPA and MCAT, needs to be high. Try to shoot for a GPA of 3.5 or higher and a MCAT score of 30 or higher. If you are lacking in one department (such as GPA), make up for it in the other department (MCAT score and vice versa). They are important because medical classes will be very challenging academically. If you can handle the academic demands of college or post-baccalaureate programs, there is a chance you can handle the rigorous education to become a doctor. Just make sure that you meet the medical school requirements before you apply.
As noted before, since there are so many people seeking admission to medical school, having high grades and scores is not enough. You have to show admissions you really care about medicine. How can you do that? You get involved in opportunities that expose you to medicine. The options of medical activities are numerous: volunteering, research, working and more. But the key point to remember is that the activities have to be related to medicine.
Although having good grades and good medical extracurricular activities would make you competitive, you should have other interests and achievements that are not related to school work or medicine. For example, you can play sports, create music, or travel. The choices are endless. Remember to enjoy life because once you are studying medicine, it would be very hard to do so. Another additional benefit is letting admissions know that you are capable of many things and that you are multi-dimensional. In addition, during the interviews, these other interests and achievements would give you a personality unlike other applicants. It helps you to tell a good story to medical school admissions why you should be awarded an admission to medical school.
So if you are currently thinking about becoming a doctor, realize that the competition is fierce. But if you meet the three criteria well, you will be among the 44% who will be accepted into medical class for the next school year.
