Feeling overwhelmed by life makes marketing difficult in certain circumstances, but I’ve learned that I can overcome anything with a bit of time management and the right attitude.

Hi, I’m a work from home mom with a VERY full schedule. Not only do I home school my teenaged sons, but I have two grandchildren whom I care for while their Mom works full time. Did I mention my schedule is hectic and full? But, yet, I still operate a highly successful business from home using the tips below.

Time management is a really big thing, along with having a can do attitude. When I schedule time for phone calls and marketing efforts, I don’t have time to “get in the mood.” I just have to BE in the mood, kind of like anyone else who has a home based business.

Solution marketing takes on new meaning with advertising efforts for any home based business. Home based marketers must specialize in showing solution based answers to client problems from the beginning of ALL marketing efforts. The tips below will be helpful to everyone who works from home.

Marketing Tip #1 – Schedule time every week for marketing to NEW clients

Updating ads, increasing articles on the web and promoting your business takes on special meaning when you can’t leave the house to meet new clients at the usual networking events. Facebook, Linked In and Twitter become your best buddies. An effective marketing strategy for online social networks is a requirement.

Marketing Tip #2 – Schedule at least one monthly network meeting out of the house

Whether it’s your own event or an event for another network marketer, be sure you’re getting out of the house once a month (or more if you can) to interact with other professionals. It’ll keep you from sounding like a “mom” on the phone. Parenting skills are required, but you don’t want your clients to feel parented when you answer their questions.

Marketing Tip #3 – Schedule phone time for a quiet hour each day, when kid noises won’t interrupt

Nap time each day is call time. I return calls, make calls and take calls during nap time. If the kids wake up and it gets noisy, I stop the calls and turn on the answering machine with a professional sounding message explaining that I’m probably online with another client (so true – those little guys are important clients). I often schedule a whole day, when my daughter has time off to care for the kids for phone calls, when I can arrive at a quiet corner of a local coffee shop with my laptop and my calendar.

Marketing Tip #4 – Schedule a day of people contact once a week outside your home

Coffee shop locations are especially great for meeting clients away from the house. Near my home is a spectacular coffee shop with a conference table in a quiet corner or small rooms with seating for three or four for a more private meeting. I’ve found I can grab a bottomless house coffee and a Panini for less than $10 and leave a nice tip without breaking the budget (even back when my budget was straining with start-up costs).

Marketing Tip #5 – Carry plenty of business cards and give them away to everyone

Business cards with nicely printed messages on the back are your best business attraction. Pass them out everywhere you go, give them with tips at restaurants where you frequently meet clients. Waitresses LOVE offering referrals when they’ve received a nice gratuity. Don’t miss an opportunity to make a friend and go to places your clients are likely to frequent.

Marketing Tip #6 – Send quality pens out into the universe sporting your message and website

Do your kids or friends work places where pens are likely to disappear? Offer to provide their pens, with your logo, motto and website printed on them. What better marketing representative can you possibly have than a pen everyone loves with your name and motto on them? Set them out everywhere. Use them yourself and promote your business with them. Be sure they are BEST quality pens. You don’t want a slacker pen representing your business.

Marketing Tip #7 – Sponsor your children and grandchildren’s sporting events and teams

Particularly if your business has local relevance, sponsor a team and provide t-shirts or uniforms for the kids and discounted t-shirts or hats for parents. These simple details work well, driving people to see who this NEW team is sponsored by, and sending them to your website, remembered and recognized on the uniforms. Present parents with bumper stickers that say “My kid is a STAR Player for (your company name)” with your website visible at the bottom of the sticker. Most parents will put them on the bumper because they’re proud of their child.
